5 dead after small jet crashes in Georgia

THOMSON, Ga. (AP) ? An official says five people are dead and two injured after a small jet ran off the end of a runway and crashed at an airport in eastern Georgia.

Thomson-McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall says the jet carrying seven people crashed after 8 p.m. Wednesday. Logan says the two survivors were taken to area hospitals and their conditions were not known. He says the identities of those killed are being withheld pending notification of family members.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said in an email that the Hawker Beechcraft 390/Premier I crashed around 8:30 p.m. at the Thomson-McDuffie County Airport, about 30 miles west of Augusta.

President Obama signs La. disaster declaration for Jan. flooding

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- President Barack Obama declared a major disaster exists in Louisiana because of the flooding in January. The President ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by the storms and flooding that happened January 8-17, 2013.

Federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms and flooding in the parishes of Acadia, Catahoula, Concordia, East Carroll, Evangeline, Franklin, Jefferson Davis, Livingston, Madison, St. Landry, and Vermilion.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

W. Craig Fugate, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Gerard M. Stolar as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.

FEMA said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

RIAA claims Google's anti-piracy downranking doesn't work

Google offered an olive branch to content producers when it promised to downrank pirate sites in its search results last summer. Really, the RIAA was looking for the whole tree; it just published a report claiming that Google's technique hasn't had any tangible impact. The agency argues that the millions of takedown requests didn't lead to "significant" drops in rank for habitual violators. It further contends that many legitimate music sites only showed up in the top ten for about half of the searches, and were often kicked down the ladder by their bootleg counterparts. We're reaching out to Google to get its side of the story, but the RIAA isn't quite as patient: it's demanding that Google "immediately" change the results and volunteers its help. While that's a step forward from the music group's previous accusatory stance, it doesn't quite represent a two-way conversation on anti-piracy measures.

GM won't sell 2014 Chevrolet SS in Canada

General Motors has announced the 2014 Chevrolet SS will not be available in Canada. The Globe and Mail reports the automaker has confirmed the high-performance sedan won't hit Canadian dealers, though GM hasn't offered up any reasoning as to why that is.

Buyers in the US of A, meanwhile, can look forward to getting their hands on the 415-horspower, rear-wheel drive SS by late summer. Something tells us it won't be long after that before Canadian officials start seeing individually imported 6.2-litre V8 four-doors in our neighbourhoods.

Fortunately, us Canadian buyers will still be able to take home the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. The C7 bowed at the Canadian International Auto Show last week, drawing sizable crowds and interest.

New flu drug stops drug-resistant strains of virus in its tracks

Feb. 21, 2013 ? A new class of influenza drug has been shown effective against drug-resistant strains of the flu virus, according to a study led by University of British Columbia researchers. Published online February 21 in the journal Science Express, the study details the development of a new drug candidate that prevents the flu virus from spreading from one cell to the next.

The drug is shown to successfully treat mice with lethal strains of the flu virus.

In order to spread in the body, the flu virus first uses a protein, called hemagglutinin, to bind to the healthy cell's receptors. Once it has inserted its RNA and replicated, the virus uses an enzyme, called neuraminidase, to sever the connection and move on to the next healthy cell.

"Our drug agent uses the same approach as current flu treatments -- by preventing neuraminidase from cutting its ties with the infected cell," says UBC Chemistry Prof. Steve Withers, the study's senior author. "But our agent latches onto this enzyme like a broken key, stuck in a lock, rendering it useless."

The World Health Organization estimates that influenza affects three to five million people globally each year, causing 250,000 to 500,000 deaths. In some pandemic years, the figure rose to millions.

"One of the major challenges of the current flu treatments is that new strains of the flu virus are becoming resistant, leaving us vulnerable to the next pandemic," says Withers, whose team includes researchers from Canada, the UK, and Australia.

"By taking advantage of the virus's own 'molecular machinery' to attach itself," Withers adds. "The new drug could remain effective longer, since resistant virus strains cannot arise without destroying their own mechanism for infection."

Iraq panel clears senior judge over Saddam ties

BAGHDAD (AP) ? An Iraqi judicial panel rejected on Tuesday a decision to remove one of the country's top judges from his post because of alleged ties to Saddam Hussein's now-dissolved Baath party, an official said.

Last week, Iraq's Justice and Accountability Committee tasked with purging government ranks of officials with ties to Saddam decided to remove judge Medhat al-Mahmoud, who heads the Supreme Federal Court, for his alleged role as an adviser to the late dictator while holding senior judicial posts.

The committee's deputy chief, Bakhtiar Omar al-Qadhi said al-Mahmoud filed an appeal to the cassation panel which didn't find strong evidence of such ties and rejected the dismissal. The panel reviews decisions by al-Qadhi's committee and wields higher authority.

Al-Mahmoud started his carrier in 1960 when he was appointed as an investigative judge. After the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003, he was chosen by the Coalition Provisional Authority as a supervisor for the Justice Ministry, and in 2005 he took over both the Supreme Federal Court and the Supreme Judicial Council that oversees courts nationwide.

In separate decision earlier last week, he was removed from the Supreme Judicial Council as requested by a new law, so that he could remain head of Supreme Federal Court.

The 80-year old judge has long been a part of the country's political wrangling. Critics of Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Mailiki, mainly from Sunni minority, consider him an ally to the premier. Many accuse him of helping al-Maliki sideline opponents by issuing arrest warrants against politicians, holding trials that do not guarantee the minimum rights to suspects and issuing interpretations to disputed articles in the constitution in favor of the Shiite-led government.

The removal decision has put parliament at loggerheads with al-Maliki, who has called it "politically-motivated" and ordered the replacement the committee's head. Parliament argues that al-Maliki doesn't have a say about the makeup of the committee as its seven members are chosen by parliament.

The vetting panel, often referred to as the De-Baathification Committee, was set up by the U.S.-led provisional authority which ruled Iraq after the invasion to purge important government jobs and positions of former mid- and high-ranking members of the Baath party.
