This past week the PPTS team helped clear out houses of flooded belongings from Weehawken to the Jersey Shore. I can assure you by the end of the week we were tight and sore from the heavy lifting. I never knew a soaked sofa cushion weighs 50 lbs! The
PPTS team takes fitness seriously and stays active but the lifting certainly took it's toll on us. Here is a reminder of how to lift safely and properly:
- If a wheel barrow or hand truck is available use it.
- Take your time and have a strategy of how you are going to lift a heavy object. This can prevent an awkward movement while lifting potentially saving your back from serious injury.
- If you are straining, ask for help.
- Remember to lift with your legs, this means if you are lifting something off the ground bend your knees and get your hips close to the ground while keeping your back straight.
- Keep your knees bent and feet hip width apart during the lift.
- Keep your head up, this will help your posture during the lift.
- Never bend at your hip to pick something up.
There is so much debris that washed up during the storm surge, be careful clearing your property. I noticed nails in wood, nails in shingles that flew off of houses and slippery floors in wet flooded houses. Be careful and use caution, let's not make a bad situation worse. Stay strong Jersey!
