Some results of first lady's anti-obesity effort

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Steps that retailers, restaurants and others are taking as part of Michelle Obama's campaign to reduce childhood obesity.

WAL-MART

Pledged in January 2011 to reformulate its store-brand, packaged foods by cutting sodium 25 percent and added sugars by 10 percent, and removing all remaining industrially produced trans fats by 2015. Leslie Dach, the company's executive vice president, said sodium in packaged bread has been cut by 13 percent; added sugar in refrigerated flavored milk, popular with children, has been cut by more than 17 percent; and sugar and sodium in bottled spaghetti sauce has been reduced by 15 percent and 4-5 percent, respectively. As promised, Wal-Mart also has begun labeling the fronts of hundreds of its store-brand products with a special "Great for You" seal designed to help shoppers easily identify healthier foods.

CHILD NUTRITION

Michelle Obama actively campaigned behind the scenes in 2010 for a child nutrition law, which passed in the final days of a Democratic-controlled House. The law helped schools pay for healthier lunches and also set new nutrition requirements for all foods in schools. Congressional Republicans fought the bill and later rolled back some of the Agriculture Department's efforts to get rid of junk food in the school lunch line. As directed by the new law, USDA last month proposed new requirements to make school vending machines and "a la carte lines" healthier as well.

AMERICAN BEVERAGE ASSOCIATION

The association, which represents Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, now also puts calorie labels on the front of cans, bottles and packs, fulfilling its pledge to do so.

HEALTHY WEIGHT COMMITMENT FOUNDATION

This coalition of retailers, and food and beverage manufacturers, said in 2010 that it would remove 1.5 trillion calories from their products by 2015 ? about 12.5 calories per person per day. The group said it couldn't comment on its progress, but has a report due out this year. The nonprofit Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is monitoring the overall effort.

DARDEN RESTAURANTS

The chain pledged in September 2011 to cut calories and sodium in all meals by 10 percent by 2016, and by 20 percent by 2021, and to serve all kids' meals with a side of fruit or vegetables and glass of 1 percent milk, unless an adult asks for a substitution. Spokesman Rich Jeffers said the changes to kids' meals are complete at Darden's four restaurant brands that serve children: Olive Garden, Red Lobster, LongHorn Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze. Jeffers said the company, which also has four other restaurant brands, is "on track" to meet its calorie- and sodium-cutting goals.

Other restaurants have pledged to improve their children's menus, too.

LET'S MOVE SALAD BARS TO SCHOOLS

Partners in the initiative ? the National Fruit and Vegetable Alliance, the United Fresh Produce Association Foundation, the Food Family Farming Foundation and the Whole Kids Foundation ? set a goal in November 2010 of putting 6,000 salad bars in school lunchrooms by the end of 2013. More than 2,100 salad bars have been funded, and more than 2,500 are expected to be in schools by May, said Lorelei DiSogra, vice president for nutrition and health at United Fresh Produce Association.

FRONT-OF-PACK CALORIE LABELS

Food and Drug Administration officials said at the beginning of Obama's first term that they were working on standards for front-of-package calorie labels, and Michelle Obama encouraged the industry to be more upfront with nutritional information to make it easier for shoppers to know what they are buying. A food industry coalition later developed its own voluntary front-of-package labels, saying Mrs. Obama's encouragement inspired the effort. FDA officials have since backed off their attempt to mandate the nutrition labels for the fronts of packages.

UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION

Last year the association created 4,647 tennis courts sized for children ages 10 and under after committing to creating just 3,200, said spokesman Barry Ford. It also donated $285,000 worth of tennis equipment to schools and youth facilities nationwide; the association had pledged to donate $150,000 worth of equipment, Ford said.

FOOD DESERTS

Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Supervalu and several smaller grocers committed to build or expand 1,500 stores in areas with limited or no access to healthy food, areas the Agriculture Department calls "food deserts." Wal-Mart, which announced it would open 275-300 such stores by the end of 2016, had opened 86 by the end of last year, said Dach, the executive vice president. Supervalu has opened 69 of the 250 Save-A-Lot stores it pledged to build by 2016, said spokesman Mike Siemienas. Walgreens declined to say how many of the 1,000 stores it promised by 2016 have been built.

New look at high-temperature superconductors

Feb. 25, 2013 ? While the phenomenon of superconductivity -- in which some materials lose all resistance to electric currents at extremely low temperatures -- has been known for more than a century, the temperature at which it occurs has remained too low for any practical applications. The discovery of "high-temperature" superconductors in the 1980s -- materials that could lose resistance at temperatures of up to negative 140 degrees Celsius -- led to speculation that a surge of new discoveries might quickly lead to room-temperature superconductors. Despite intense research, these materials have remained poorly understood.

There is still no agreement on a single theory to account for high-temperature superconductivity. Recently, however, researchers at MIT and elsewhere have found a new way to study fluctuating charge-density waves, which are the basis for one of the leading theories. The researchers say this could open the door to a better understanding of high-temperature superconductivity, and perhaps prompt new discoveries of higher-temperature superconductors.

The findings were published this week in the journal Nature Materials by assistant professor of physics Nuh Gedik; graduate student Fahad Mahmood; Darius Torchinsky, a former MIT postdoc who is now at the California Institute of Technology; and two researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Explaining the basis for high-temperature superconductivity remains "the hardest problem in condensed-matter physics," Gedik says. But one way of getting a handle on this exotic state of matter is to study what happens to these materials near their "transition temperature," the point below which they become superconductors.

Previous experiments have shown that above the transition temperature, there is a peculiar state where, Gedik says, "the material starts to behave very weirdly": Its electrons act in unusual ways, which some physicists believe is caused by a phenomenon called charge-density waves. While the electron density in most conductors is uniform, Gedik explains, in materials with charge-density waves the density is distributed in a sinusoidal pattern, somewhat like ripples on a pond. But so far, such charge-density waves have only been detected in high-temperature superconductors under special circumstances, such as a particular level of doping (the introduction of atoms of another element onto its surface).

Some researchers have proposed that these waves are elusive in high-temperature superconductors because they fluctuate very rapidly, at speeds measured in picoseconds (trillionths of a second). "You can't see it with conventional techniques," Gedik says.

That's where Gedik's new approach comes in: His team has spent years perfecting methods for studying the movement of electrons by zapping them with laser pulses lasting just a few femtoseconds (or quadrillionths of a second), and then detecting the results with a separate laser beam.

Using that method, the researchers have now detected these fluctuating waves. To do this, they have selectively generated and observed two different collective motions of electrons in these waves: variation in amplitude (the magnitude of modulation of the waves) and in phase (the position of the troughs and peaks of the waves). These measurements show that charge density waves are fluctuating at an interval of only about 2 picoseconds.

"It's not surprising that static techniques didn't see them," Gedik says, but "this settles the question: The fluctuating charge-density waves do exist" -- at least in one of the cuprate compounds, the first high-temperature superconducting materials discovered in the 1980s.

Another question: What role, if any, do these charge-density waves play in superconductivity? "Are they helping, or are they interfering?" Gedik asks. To answer this question, the researchers studied the same material, with optimal doping, in which the superconducting transition temperature is maximized. "We see no evidence of charge-density waves in this sample," Gedik says. This suggests that charge-density waves are probably competing with superconductivity.

In addition, it remains to be seen whether the same phenomenon will be observed in other high-temperature superconducting materials. The new technique should make it possible to find out.

In any case, detecting these fluctuations could help in understanding high-temperature superconductors, Gedik says -- which, in turn, could "help in finding other [superconducting materials] that actually work at room temperature." That elusive goal could enable significant new applications, such as electric transmission lines that eliminate the losses that now waste as much as 30 percent of all electricity produced.

David Hsieh, an assistant professor of physics at Caltech, says the phenomena detected by this research "are known to be very difficult to detect," so this work "is a great technical achievement and a high-quality piece of research." By showing for the first time that the fluctuating charge-density waves seem to compete with superconductivity, he says, "It provides the insight that finding a way to suppress this fluctuating charge-density wave order may simultaneously increase" the temperature limits of superconductivity.

The work, which also included researchers Anthony Bollinger and Ivan Bozovic of Brookhaven National Laboratory, was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Consumer confidence is up, but will they spend?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Americans are more confident in the economy than they have been in the past few months, but that doesn't mean they're willing to spend more money.

Consumer confidence rebounded in February, reversing three straight months of declines, as Americans get more used to the higher Social Security payroll tax, The Conference Board, a private research group said Tuesday.

But the rosier outlook follows major companies from Burger King to Wal-Mart that have cautioned in recent weeks that Americans are pulling back on their spending as they try to stomach their smaller paychecks since the tax rose by 2 percentage points last month.

Robert Zamora, who lives in Boston, says while he feels encouraged that the value of his home and his stock portfolio are rising, he's decided to spend less because of the higher payroll tax, which has reduced his monthly income by $250.

"There is no more discretionary money to go around for anything other than the basics," says Zamora, who works in web development for a financial services firm.

The way Americans feel about the economy has gone through peaks and valleys as they've tried to reconcile improving stock and housing markets with new economic challenges. In addition to the higher payroll tax, gas prices are rising and there are worries that lawmakers won't resolve a budget impasse that threatens to trigger $85 billion in spending cuts starting Friday.

The Conference Board's index is closely watched by economists because it attempts to keep a monthly pulse on how Americans are feeling about everything from their jobs to their incomes. That's important because when Americans feel good, they spend. And since consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, the economy benefits greatly when Americans feel good about it.

The January reading shows that Americans are more confident, but still skittish. Confidence rose to 69.6, up from a revised 58.4 in January and the 60.5 analysts polled by research firm FactSet expected. That's the highest reading since November's of 71.5, but well below the 90 that indicates a healthy economy.

The Conference Board's survey, which was conducted from Feb. 1 through Feb. 14 on a sample of 2,300 shoppers, shows that Americans are particularly upbeat about their job and income prospects. But that's coming off gloomier numbers over the past three months. The number of people anticipating more jobs rose to 16.7 percent from 14.4 percent, while those expecting their incomes to increase rose to 15.7 percent from 13.5 percent.

"Consumers are feeling better, but they don't feel a whole lot better," says Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo.

There's no wonder Americans are torn between positivity and angst. There's a mix of good and bad economic news.

Stocks have roughly doubled since June 2009. And the job market, while still tough, also is rebounding: In January, employers added 157,000 jobs. Still, the unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent in December.

But whether or not Americans open their wallets and pocketbooks may rely on a few economic wildcards. One of them is gas prices, which started to climb in mid-January. As of Tuesday, they are $3.78 per gallon, 40 cents higher than they were a month ago. If gas prices keep climbing, that could squeeze Americans, particularly those already living paycheck to paycheck.

And many economists worry that the budget fights in Washington could really hurt Americans' confidence. They worry that the impasse could persist for much of this year, and be drag on economic growth and Americans' willingness to spend.

Zamora, the Boston resident, certainly frets about how lawmakers are going to resolve the budget crisis.

"Nobody knows what the ripple effect will be," he says. "I don't want to be caught blowing in the wind."

Virus shows promise as prostate cancer treatment | Science Codex

A recombinant Newcastle disease virus kills all kinds of prostate cancer cells, including hormone resistant cells, but leaves normal cells unscathed, according to a paper published online ahead of print in the Journal of Virology. A treatment for prostate cancer based on this virus would avoid the adverse side effects typically associated with hormonal treatment for prostate cancer, as well as those associated with cancer chemotherapies generally, says corresponding author Subbiah Elankumaran of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg. The modified virus is now ready to be tested in preclinical animal models, and possibly in phase I human clinical trials.

Newcastle disease virus kills chickens, but does not harm humans. It is an oncolytic virus that hones in on tumors, and has shown promising results in a number of human clinical trials for various forms of cancer. However, successful treatments have required multiple injections of large quantities of virus, because in such trials the virus probably failed to reach solid tumors in sufficient quantities, and spread poorly within the tumors.

The researchers addressed this problem by modifying the virus's fusion protein. Fusion protein fuses the virus envelope to the cell membrane, enabling the virus to enter the host cell. These proteins are activated by being cleaved by any of a number of different cellular proteases. They modified the fusion protein in their construct such that it can be cleaved only by prostate specific antigen (which is a protease). That minimizes off-target losses, because these "retargeted" viruses interact only with prostate cancer cells, thus reducing the amount of virus needed for treatment.

Retargeted Newcastle disease virus has major potential advantages over other cancer therapies, says Elankumaran. First, its specificity for prostate cancer cells means it would not attack normal cells, thereby avoiding the various unpleasant side effects of conventional chemotherapies. In previous clinical trials, even with extremely large doses of naturally occurring strains, "only mild flu-like symptoms were seen in cancer patients," says Elankumaran. Second, it would provide a new treatment for hormone-refractory patients, without the side effects of testosterone suppression that result from hormonal treatments.

About one man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and one in 36 will die of this disease. Men whose prostate cancer becomes refractory to hormone treatment have a median survival of about 40 months if they have bone metastases, and 68 months if they do not have bone metastases.

A closer look at the PS4's specs, and what they mean for you ...

playstation-4

Even though Sony?s PlayStation 4 conference lacked any indication of what the console might look like when it hit store shelves this holiday season, the company did, however, remove the veil from the console?s specifications. Many rumors have been confirmed and we now know some specifics about core count, RAM, and graphics horsepower.

These figures can be opaque to the average gamer, however. What do they mean, and how does the PlayStation 4 stand up to the other gaming systems?

x86 infiltrates a console

Sony will be shipping the new system with an eight-core 64-bit processor based off AMD?s ?Jaguar? processor line. Don?t let the core count fool you ? this is not a high-end PC part. Jaguar is built for mobile products like sleekbooks (AMD?s answer to the ultrabook), not desktops, so the raw power of the PS4?s processor will be behind the typical gaming PC.

That may sound dire, but there?s reason for optimism. Consoles have always benefited from standardization that helps developers optimize their games. Eight x86 cores ? even slow ones ? could be formidable if properly used. PC games have historically made disappointing use of multiple threads, but developers have been constrained by a market dominated by dual-core systems. The PS4 will banish that issue.

PlayStation 4 Press Conference

Building a console off the same instruction set used by PCs is a boon to game development, as well. ?Programmers familiar with the PC will find transitioning to console development easier than ever before and ports between the two will take less time to optimize.

Everyone needs a companion

Though x86 cores are the brunt of the new console?s might, Sony stated at its event that another low-power core will be bundled in, as well. The additional processor exists not to help with games directly but instead to process tasks in the background.

This is a great advantage to the console experience. The PlayStation 3 is notorious for its lengthy downloads which, more often than not, can?t be completed in the background. Sony has also thrown in video recording and real-time sharing features that would certainly reduce performance if the x86 cores were left on their own. This also plays in to one of the new features that Sony announced during the unveiling event ? the ability to play downloadable games almost instantly. Rather than waiting for a sizable game to download, you will be able to begin the download and begin play after only a small portion has been completed, then continue to play as the remainder of the download continues in the background.

The low-power chip could also be used to display the user interface, keeping the console cool and quiet when it?s not running a game. This is speculation on our part, however, as Sony has not specifically mentioned that the low-power core will be used for this purpose.

Radeon conquers another console

Sony states that the PS4?s graphics chip, which is derived from existing Radeon technology and integrated into the Jaguar processor die, can push 1.84 TFLOPS. That number puts the power of the GPU roughly on par with a Radeon HD 7850 video card.

That may seem disappointing because the Radeon HD 7850 is ?only? a mid-range GPU. Again, careful consideration allows for more optimism. Reviews of the Radeon HD 7850 graphics card have already shown that it can handle most current PC games at 1080p with medium to high detail, which is a huge leap over current-gen consoles.

Add in optimization, along with the possibility of rendering at 720p and scaling to 1080p (as current consoles do), and you have the potential for a huge leap forward in quality. The power on tap falls short of enabling support for 4K resolution in games, however. 4K video out will be supported for photos and videos, but games will render at a lower (as yet unspecified) resolution.

Eight is great

The number eight didn?t just show up in the core count. Sony has also packed in eight gigabytes of RAM, an absolutely massive increase over the 512MB (yes, megabytes!) found in the PlayStation 3. And the RAM is high-speed GDDR5, which will let Sony maximize the system?s data pipe.

playstation-4-press-announcement

Why does this matter? More RAM (and faster RAM) will let developers create bigger textures, larger levels, more complex AI and more. The massive improvement in available memory is arguably the new console?s most impressive feature.

The memory is shared system-wide, which means that it?s not exactly equivalent to a PC with eight gigabytes of RAM. If a computer?s video card runs out of video memory the main system memory can?t pick up the slack. The PS3, which used separate main system and video memory (256MB each), also faced this issue. Unifying the memory on the PS4 will make the console easier to develop for and more flexible over time.

Wait, there?s more

There are other improved components worth mentioning. Chief among them is the new Blu-Ray drive with up to 6x speed. This upgrade will roughly triple the maximum data throughput available from a disc, significantly shortening load and install times.

Sony has also ponied up for an unknown number of high-speed USB 3.0 ports, 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth and Gigabit LAN. None of these technologies are new, of course, but they point to a well-rounded system with numerous fast connectivity options for networking and peripherals.

Hard drive speed and size is the only specification that remains unclear. This is likely because it hasn?t been finalized. Sony will almost certainly release several different bundles with drives of varying capacity, and replaceable hard drives is a definite possibility as well.?

How does it compare?

Sony?s new console absolutely demolishes the WiiU on the hardware battlefield. Sony is providing five more cores than Nintendo, a graphics solution that is two generations newer, and four times as much RAM.

Closer examination only widens the gap. The PS4?s processor architecture is more recent, the graphics chip is larger and the RAM much quicker. History is repeating itself. Nintendo?s hardware will once again be substantially behind the competition.

PlayStation 4 Press Conference

Microsoft hasn?t revealed its hand yet, of course, but there have been multiple leaks over the course of the last year. The information available so far indicates a system similar to Sony?s console with eight x86 cores built by AMD. They may even use the same Jaguar architecture. Leaks say the cores will run at 1.6 GHz, a clock speed that?s spot-on for Jaguar cores.

The next Xbox is likely to use an AMD Radeon derived graphics component as well, though the latest leaks say it will serve up about 1.2 TFLOPS of power, less than the 1.84 TFLOPS figure quoted by Sony.

RAM may be the main differentiator. While the next Xbox is rumored to also offer eight gigabytes of memory, leaks say it will be DDR3, which is slower. There?s reason to believe Sony has caught Microsoft a bit off-guard in this area. The GDDR5 memory found in the PS4 is unprecedented. Even Nvidia?s Titan graphics card, which retails at $999, has less.

Is this really the next gen?

Some sources have already pointed out that Sony?s new console does nothing a modern PC can?t offer ? and not a particularly expensive one, at that. An enthusiast could assemble a roughly equivalent system for $600 to $700. A gaming computer with even a moderately powerful graphics component, like the Nvidia GTX 660 Ti, is far more capable than this new console. Specifications suggest the PlayStation 4 isn?t impressive when compared to a PC.

That?s true, but also ignorant of history. The PlayStation 3, for instance, uses a graphics component derived from the Nvidia G70. Graphics cards built with that technology were widely available in PCs at the time of the PS3?s release. Even so, the PS3?s visual fidelity was impressive at release.?

?Next-gen? has always been relative to previous consoles. And from that view the PlayStation 4 is a massive leap forward. The new console, compared to its predecessor, offers sixteen times more raw memory and even more bandwidth (because the memory is also quicker). The power of the PS3?s graphics solution, measured by TFLOPs, is not 100% clear ? but the chip it?s derived from was quoted at 200 GFLOPS, which means the PS4 is about nine times more powerful.

We know that none of the console makers want to repeat Sony?s mistake of launching the PlayStation 3 at $599 for a well-equipped bundle. Given that limitation, Sony has pushed console hardware as far as possible. Finally, after nearly seven years, the next generation of consoles has arrived.?

Suicide bombers target Afghan security forces

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Suicide bombers targeted Afghanistan's intelligence agency and other security forces in four coordinated attacks in the heart of Kabul and outlying areas on Sunday in a bloody reminder of the insurgency's reach nearly 12 years into the war.

The brazen assaults, which occurred within a three-hour timespan, were the latest to strike Afghan forces, who have suffered higher casualties this year as U.S. and other foreign troops gradually take a back seat and shift responsibility for security to the government.

The deadliest attack occurred just after sunrise ? a suicide car bombing at the gate of the National Directorate of Security compound in Jalalabad, 125 kilometers (78 miles) east of Kabul.

Guards shot and killed the driver but he managed to detonate the explosives-packed vehicle, killing two intelligence agents and wounding three others, according to a statement by the intelligence agency. Provincial government spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai confirmed the casualty toll and said the building was damaged in the attack.

A guard also shot and killed a man in an SUV filled with dynamite that was targeting an NDS building on a busy street in Kabul, not far from NATO headquarters. The explosives in the back of the vehicle were defused. Blood stained the driver's seat and the ground where security forces dragged out the would-be attacker.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the Jalalabad attack and two others in the eastern province of Logar in an email to reporters. He did not address the attempted assault in Kabul.

Shortly before the Jalalabad attack, a suicide attacker detonated a minivan full of explosives at a police checkpoint in Puli Alam, on the main highway between Kabul and Logar province. One policeman was killed and two others were wounded, along with a bystander, according to the NDS.

Also in Logar province, which is due south of Kabul, a man wearing a suicide vest was stopped by police as he tried to force his way into the police headquarters for the Baraki Barak district, said Din Mohammad Darwesh, the provincial government spokesman. The attacker detonated his vest while being searched, wounding one policeman, according to Darwesh and the NDS.

"Once again the enemies of peace and stability in Afghanistan ... staged coordinated attacks against the Afghan security forces and the Afghan people," the intelligence agency said.

The attacks were a reminder that insurgents are still on the offensive even as U.S. and other international forces prepare to end their combat mission by the end of 2014.

Afghan soldiers and police are easier targets than their NATO allies because their checkpoints and bases are less fortified.

More than 1,200 Afghan soldiers were killed in 2012 compared to more than 550 the previous year, according to data compiled by the Washington-based Brookings Institution.

U.S. troop deaths, meanwhile, declined overall from 404 in 2011 to 295 in 2012.

Organizing For Action Ad Buy Targets GOP Lawmakers On Background Checks

Organizing for Action, the pro-Obama advocacy group formed last month out of the president's reelection campaign, is launching an online campaign urging Republican lawmakers to support universal background checks for gun purchases.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the ads will target 16 Republican lawmakers who have not publicly committed to stricter background checks, including Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) in ads on local news outlets' websites starting Friday. The LA Times reports that the group spent close six figures on the ad buy, which is the issue-based nonprofit group's first.

The ad launch coincides with the group's national "Day of Action," which encompasses 100 events in 80 congressional districts. According to the LA Times, Friday's events are aimed at building support for tougher background check standards, but future "action" days will focus on other aspects of the president's gun policy proposals.

"These events range from Letter to the editor writing parties, or rallies and press events, to candle light vigils and petitions for members of Congress," OFA spokeswoman Katie Hogan told The Hill. "These events were tailored by our supporters on what they thought was the best event for their community."

A bipartisan group of senators is currently negotiating background check legislation, which would expand the process for vetting gun buyers.

"It's coming along pretty well," Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said last week of the proposal. "We're hopeful."
