MSNBC criticized for editing of gun hearing video

(AP) ? MSNBC invited viewers Wednesday to draw their own conclusions about whether the parent of a Connecticut school shooting victim was heckled at a legislative hearing but didn't address criticism that it aired a deceptively edited video of the event.

The NBC-owned cable news network found itself under attack for its editing practices less than a year after three employees of NBC or an NBC-owned station lost their jobs over the editing of a 911 call in the Trayvon Martin case.

On Monday, MSNBC's Martin Bashir reported on hearing testimony given that day by Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son, Jesse, was killed last month in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

In the hushed hearing room, Heslin said, "I ask if there's anybody in this room that can give me one reason or challenge this question: why anybody in this room needs to have ... one of these assault-type weapons or military weapons or high-capacity clips?"

Heslin paused for five seconds and looked around him. No one else spoke.

"Not one person can answer that question," he said.

Then, someone in the audience shouted: "The Second Amendment shall not be infringed."

After the audience was admonished by a legislator not to speak, Heslin said, "Anyway, we're all entitled to our own opinion, and I respect their opinions and thoughts, but I wish they'd respect mine and give it a little bit of thought."

Video aired by Bashir Monday omitted the challenge, depicting Heslin saying: "Why anybody in this room needs to have ... one of these assault-type weapons or military weapons." At that point, without any pause, the audience member's interjection about the Second Amendment was heard. Heslin's comment about respecting opinions was omitted.

The camera then focused on Bashir, who said, "a father's grief interrupted by the cries of a heckler."

The passage as aired by MSNBC received criticism for being deceptive.

"This is not how a legitimate, professional news organization operates," said Brent Bozell, founder of the Media Research Center, a conservative media watchdog. "MSNBC's relentless anti-gun advocacy is bad enough, but this is downright dishonest."

MSNBC spokeswoman Lauren Skowronski did not immediately address questions about why MSNBC made the changes or whether criticism that it was misleading is valid.

Bashir was out sick on Wednesday, but substitute anchor Ari Melber said Bashir had made note of questions about whether Heslin had been heckled. MSNBC then played an unedited video of the passage in question.

"Martin and others have called that interruption heckling," Melber said. "Some disagree. He wanted you to hear that in full so you can draw your own conclusions."

Melber said nothing on the air about the fact that it initially aired an edited portion of the video.

Last spring, NBC's "Today" show and its Miami station WTVJ aired versions of a police emergency call made by Florida neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman that emphasized his identification of Trayvon Martin as a black man, before Zimmerman shot Martin. Zimmerman had given his description of Martin after a dispatcher asked about his race but that portion of the tape wasn't initially aired. NBC later apologized.

US January Jobs Report 2012: Unemployment Rate To Hold Steady; Payrolls To Show Steady Growth

?We started the year on a pretty solid footing,? said Steve Blitz, chief economist at ITG Investment Research. ?I think the report is going to be a little bit better than what most people think.?

Economists expect nonfarm payrolls to show a respectable, but hardly spectacular, gain of 160,000, after a 155,000 December increase. Projections provided by 90 economists polled by Thomson Reuters ranged from a gain of 75,000 jobs to a gain of 200,000. Over the past two years, employment growth averaged 153,000 per month.

Hiring in the construction sector, boosted temporarily by the combined effects of the clean-up operation after Superstorm Sandy and the unseasonably warm winter weather, probably slowed this month. The 30,000 construction jobs added in December is unlikely to be repeated in January.

The Labor Department will release the January jobs data on Friday at 8:30 a.m. EST.

A 160,000 increase in payroll employment in January would maintain the pick-up in jobs growth seen in the second half of last year without being strong enough to significantly reduce the unemployment rate from December?s 7.8 percent.

After two months of gains, economists expect a softening in wages with average hourly earnings only increasing 0.2 percent, following a 0.3 percent gain in December. The average workweek is expected to hold at 34.5.

Population And Benchmark Revisions??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

There are a few special factors this month, including the final benchmark revision to payrolls and the population adjustment to the household survey.

Every January the Bureau of Labor Statistics introduces the latest population estimates into the household survey, which can affect the level of the household measure of employment and the size of the labor force. In prior years, the population adjustment has created big swings in the labor force, which biased the unemployment rate.

Since the Labor Department does not revise the historical figures, this generates a discontinuity between December and January. ?January?s monthly changes in household employment and the labor force should be interpreted with care,? Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at U.K.-based Capital Economics, said in a note to clients.

At the same time, the BLS will incorporate the results of the annual benchmark revision to past payroll figures. The revision is based on a universal count of unemployment insurance records which, as all employers are required by law to file, are more accurate than the normal monthly survey covering roughly a third of all employees. The revision should correct for any deficiencies in the normal monthly survey, such as the failure to accurately pick up the birth and death of firms or any distortions within the sample, according to Dales.

The preliminary estimate issued by the BLS last September, but not yet incorporated into the data, suggested that the level of nonfarm payrolls in the year to March 2012 will be revised up by a fairly hefty 386,000, or around 32,000 per month.

The data between March and December of last year will also be revised, but the BLS has not provided any guidance on this.

Manufacturing Treading Water

Businesses in the manufacturing sector probably added 10,000 new jobs this month, after adding 25,000 jobs in December, economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters predicted.

?For some time, we?ve seen companies with the ability to spend more on capital expenditure and additional hiring, but it seems that the motive to increase either of those activity has been somewhat lacking throughout the recovery,? said Christopher Petrosino, managing director of the quantitative strategies group at Manning & Napier.

For companies that do want to hire, they are having a hard time finding the right employees because of the skills gap. Since the 1990s, overtime hours increased to keep up with the decreasing supply of skilled laborers, but these workers can only be stretched so thin.

According to a survey by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute, 83 percent of manufacturing companies indicated a moderate to serious shortage of skilled production workers. Moreover, 69 percent expect the skilled labor shortage to grow over the next three to five years as current skilled workers near retirement.

A median 5 percent of jobs were left unfilled due to lack of qualified candidates, amounting to about 600,000 jobs, according to the survey.

?We are starting to see anecdotal evidence of manufacturing expansion in the U.S., but it takes time for improvements to show up in the jobs number,? said Michael Knolla, a research analyst at Manning & Napier, which oversees about $40 billion in assets.

Companies such as Agrium Inc. (NYSE:AGU), CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:CF), Rentech, Inc. (NYSEAMEX:RTK) and Potash Corp./Saskatchewan (NYSE:POT) have recently announced brownfield expansion plans.

?When those brownfield operations actually come to life, then the real big hiring comes as we get to the next stage where we see greenfield investments,? Knolla said. ?We?ve seen some greenfield announcements, but those can take two to three years to actually flow through.?

As typically happens at the start of a new year, the Institute of Supply Management on Monday revised the seasonal factors for the data contained in its closely watched manufacturing survey. For December, the revised manufacturing purchasing managers? index now stands at 50.2, lower than the originally reported 50.7.

The ISM is scheduled to release its January factory survey this Friday, which is expected to show a reading of 50.5.

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT), the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, said Monday it expects the first half of 2013 to be weaker than the first half of 2012, with better growth in the second half.

Federal Reserve To Stay Dovish

Having just initiated an expansion of quantitative easing, or QE, in December, it is unlikely that there will be any substantive policy changes at this week's federal open market committee meeting.

Recently, Fed officials have sounded differing opinions on how long it should continue buying bonds, with some leaning toward ending the purchases before the end of the year. Some Fed officials are worried about the potential for "financial instability" if the Fed's balance sheet grows too large.

Since the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, the central bank?s portfolio has more than tripled, and has topped $3 trillion for the first time as the Fed continued with its easy-money policy.

HSBC chief U.S. economist Kevin Logan expects the current open-ended program of $85billion in asset purchases per month to be re-affirmed along with the new thresholds of 6.5 percent unemployment and 2.5 percent inflation for an end to the exceptionally low fed funds rate.

Now the Committee can sit back and wait to see the effects of these policy changes on the economy. ?It will probably take at least six months to see any substantive changes, and so policy is now most likely on hold for the next several months,? Logan said in a note to clients.

The conditionality for a change in the fed funds rate is clear: the thresholds are 6.5 percent unemployment and projected inflation of less than 2.5 percent. The conditions for a change in the QE policy are not so clear. In December the committee said it would continue its purchases of Treasury and agency mortgage-backed securities as long as the outlook for the labor market does not improve "substantially."

Logan believes that "substantially" means, among other things, a gain of at least 200,000 new payroll jobs a month for six months. Payroll employment increased an average 160,000 jobs a month for the past six months.

?I don?t see any dramatic change in policy this year simply because I just don?t see any dramatic shift in the economic data to push them [policy makers] in that direction,? Blitz said.

travel & leisure: Important Tips For Planning Valentine's Day ...

By Jenny Mays

If considering doing something more special than flowers and candy this Valentine's Day and Valentine's Day weekend getaways are a consideration, here are some great tips for you to remember. You want this trip to be memorable so make sure that you consider the following details.

1. Work Schedules

It is pointless to plan a romantic getaway and surprise your partner with it only for him or her to say that they cannot get away. Do make sure that your spouse, girlfriend or boyfriend can go away with you and that work or other scheduled events will not interfere. Even if the trip is a surprise, you can still inquire about whether he or she will be available without disclosing the trip destination that you have in mind.

2. Overcome Awkwardness

There are certain aspects of going away together even on a short Valentine's Day weekend getaway that may be uncomfortable especially if not discussed beforehand. It also depends on how well you know each other or how long you have been dating. One of these issues is whether to book one or two rooms. This may be uncomfortable unless you both know what is expected and have discussed the issue.

Do not simply assume as you want to ensure that the trip is romantic and not uncomfortable or awkward from the beginning to the end. If there are any other aspects besides this that may lead to awkwardness, it is better to discuss the issues beforehand so that you are both clear and understand each other.

3. Location

For a Valentine's Day Weekend getaway or any other getaway, you want to ensure that the location you pick is one that your partner will love. You should also like the location but when in doubt, always defer to your partners likes and dislikes when trying to decide on the destination and want to surprise him or her with it.

4. Romantic trips as a gift

Depending on the length of the relationship or how well the two of you know each other, you may want to consider whether the trip will be too extravagant of a gift that will make the other person uncomfortable or feel obligated to please you. So even if you can afford it and can go all out, you may want to select a cheaper or less extravagant trip or romantic gift if the relationship isn't where it should be to warrant an extravagant romantic trip.

49ers' Culliver apologizes for anti-gay remarks

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver apologized Thursday for anti-gay comments he made to a comedian during Super Bowl media day, saying "that's not what I feel in my heart."

"I'm sorry if I offended anyone. They were very ugly comments," Culliver said during an hour-long media session. "Hopefully I learn and grow from this experience and this situation."

He said he would welcome a gay teammate to the 49ers, a reversal of his remarks to Artie Lange two days earlier during an interview at the Superdome.

"I treat everyone equal," Culliver said. "That's not how I feel."

He added that he realized his comments were especially offensive to many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area, which is home to a large gay community.

"I love San Francisco," Culliver said.

During the interview with Lange, Culliver responded to questions by saying he wouldn't welcome a gay player in the locker room. He also said the 49ers didn't have any gay players, and if they did those players should leave.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh met privately with Culliver to discuss the remarks.

"I reject what he said," Harbaugh said. "That's not something that reflects the way the organization feels, the way the rest of the players feel."

The coach would not discuss if Culliver would face discipline from the team, such as a fine or loss of playing time.

"He pledged to grow from it," Harbaugh said.

The interview began with Lange asking Culliver about his sexual plans with women during Super Bowl week. Lange followed up with a question about whether Culliver would consider pursuing a gay man.

"I don't do the gay guys, man. I don't do that," Culliver said during the one-minute taped interview. "Ain't got no gay people on the team. They gotta get up outta here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff."

Lange asked Culliver to reiterate his thoughts, to which the player said, "It's true." He added he wouldn't welcome a gay teammate ? no matter how talented.

"Nah. Can't be ... in the locker room, nah," he said. "You've gotta come out 10 years later after that."

The 24-year-old Culliver, a third-round draft pick in 2011 out of South Carolina, made 47 tackles with two interceptions and a forced fumble this season while starting six games for the NFC champion Niners (13-4-1).

He had his first career postseason interception in San Francisco's 28-24 win at Atlanta for the NFC title, which sent the 49ers to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995. They will face the AFC champion Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

The 49ers participate in the NFL's "It Gets Better" anti-bullying campaign. Three organizations working for LGBT inclusion in sports ? Athlete Ally, You Can Play, and GLAAD ? reacted to Culliver's remarks and later acknowledged his apology.

"Chris Culliver's comments were disrespectful, discriminatory and dangerous, particularly for the young people who look up to him," said Athlete Ally Executive Director Hudson Taylor. "His words underscore the importance of the athlete ally movement and the key role that professional athletes play in shaping an athletic climate that affirms and includes gay and lesbian players."

Calling Lange's questions "real disrespectful," Culliver said he realized he was speaking to a comedian and not a journalist.

"That was pretty much in a joking manner," the player said. "It's nothing about how I feel."

Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, who made headlines this season with his vocal support of a gay-marriage initiative in Maryland, said Culliver's comments to Lange were reflective of how many players in the NFL feel, even if they don't express it publicly. He hopes the 49ers cornerback will learn from this experience and become a positive role model in the quest for equality.

"You can't fight hate with hate," Ayanbadejo said. "You've got to fight hate with love."

Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard said Culliver should be allowed to express his views, even if some people found them offensive.

"The guy's entitled to his own opinion," said Pollard, who has acknowledged that he disagrees with Ayanbadejo's stand on gay marriage. "I'm not going to sit here and knock him. I'm not going to sit here and judge him. It's freedom of speech. If you don't like it, don't listen to it."

Dazed and Confused Actor Jason London Beaten, Arrested, and Crapped His PantsSubmit Comment
"Dazed and Confused" actor Jason London was arrested for disorderly conduct/fighting and assault on Sunday morning. According to reports, police were called to a bar in Arizona after getting a call about a man bleeding on the street.

When officers arrived, they found London with a swollen eye. The bouncer explained that the actor sneezed in his face when he entered. When the bouncer asked for an apology, London punched him in the face. London was quickly beat up and thrown out of the club.

Paramedics soon arrived, but London continued being aggressive, shoving some of them. The actor was immediately arrested. On his way to the police station, London made such statements as "Guess what f*ggot? I f*cking love this. I f*cking own you guys. I'm rich and I'm a motherf*cking famous actor. F*cking look me up, b*tch."

After telling the cops that "it smells like sh*t in your car and your breath smells like diarrhea," London leaned to his side and crapped in his pants. "I told you I'm happy as sh*t," he added.

The next day, London's wife told police, "I know he's an *sshole when he drinks."
