A record-breaking cold spell left icy patches on local roads Monday morning, causing at least one accident, but warmer mornings are expected starting on Wednesday.
Tuesday will bring more colder-than-normal temperatures and strong winds. The National Weather Service said to expect below freezing temperatures in the Antelope Valley and near-freezing temps in parts of the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys before 9 a.m.
The agency also issued a wind advisory, with gusts between 35 to 50 miles per hour in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys.
The cold weather took its toll Monday.
A homeless man in his 50s was found dead on a sidewalk in downtown Los Angeles - on a morning when the 34-degree reading broke the previous record low of 36 degrees set in downtown L.A. on Jan. 14, 2007.
Authorities said the man may have been sleeping under blankets or a sleeping bag, and he appeared to die from natural causes.
San Fernando Valley commuters hit a snag in Studio City when Beverly Glen Boulevard was closed for several hours after a five-car collision caused by ice.
The Los Angeles Fire Department closed the winding hill route between the Valley and Los Angeles at 7:15 a.m. just south of Ventura Boulevard to Mulholland Drive. It reopened at 2:30 p.m.
"The department closed the section
because of the traffic collision, and noted the roadway was covered with ice," LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said.A five-car collision occurred at Beverly Glen and Mulholland, with one car possible over turned, he said. There were no injuries. There were reports of a sprinkler adding to the ice on Beverly Glen Boulevard.
Temperatures throughout the region are expected warm up through the rest of the week, with days in the low to mid-70s and mornings above 40 degrees.
